You’ve installed a new shower head and it works perfectly okay for a few months, then you notice that the sprays is uneven and no matter how you adjust the pressure you’ve still got the same problem.

Here are a couple of reasons why your shower head is not functioning properly.

Mineral Build-Up (Limescale)

If you are in a hard water area, the holes in your showerhead become clogged up due to the mineral deposits in the hard water.

Dirt Build-Up

All equipment over time will need to be clean to ensure all working parts move freely and the tiny holes are free from buildup of dirt.

Most commercial showerhead cleaners are acid-base, for Descaler and Sanitizer showerheads.

Health & Safety with commercial showerhead cleaners, you must strictly follow the manufacturers’ instructions due to the chemical makeup of the product.

If you don’t use the product correctly you can seriously damage your health plus damage the surrounding area.

A cheaper solution is to use every day 
household items like Baking Soda,
white vinegar and plastic bags.

A Removable Showerhead

1. Remove the showerhead from the shower hose ensuring that you keep the rubber washer in a safe place for refitting.

2. Select a plastic container, makes which is large enough for 3 cups of white vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda, this container should also be high enough to submerge the showerhead completely.

3. Find an old toothbrush or similar brushed to remove the loose limescale from the showerhead before doing the following step.

4. Place a showerhead into the container ensuring that the head is completely covered with solution.

5. You will notice a chemical reaction between the baking soda and the white vinegar will start to bubble.

6. Leave the showerhead in the solution for at least an hour to remove the limescale, for a deeper clean leave overnight.

7. When sufficient time has elapsed, remove the showerhead scrub any remaining limescale with a clean, soft sponge then rinse with warm water allowing the water to flow through the nozzles.

8. Make sure you remove excess vinegar is rinsed off before cleaning with a soft cloth.

9. We connect the showerhead to the shower hose making sure you have inserted the rubber washer, allow the shower to run for several minutes to ensure all vinegar solution has been removed from inside the showerhead.

A Fixed Showerhead

1. Showerhead which is fixed and cannot be removed for cleaning you can still use the previous cleaning solution to remove dirt and mineral buildup.

2. Find a plastic bag which is big enough for the showerhead and free from any holes which also can support the weight of the vinegar solution.

3. Find an old toothbrush or similar brushed to remove the loose limescale from the showerhead before doing the following step.

4. Follow step 2 the mixing the solution, place the solution into the plastic bag then rise the bag up to the showerhead, making sure that you have enough plastic above the showerhead to tie off.

5. Leave the showerhead in the solution for at least an hour to remove the limescale, for a deeper clean leave overnight.

6. When sufficient time has elapsed, remove the bag carefully then scrub any remaining limescale with a clean, soft sponge

6, Run the shower with hot water for several minutes until you no longer smell the vinegar.
