Unit 206 Construct cavity walling forming masonry structures
The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the
knowledge and skills to construct walling to form masonry structures
The learner will:
1. understand how to plan and select resources for practical tasks
The learner can:
A cavity wall consists of two leaves or skins of masonry separated by a Cavity space.
The inner leave wall may be constructed of masonry units such as concrete block, brick or reinforced concrete.
The outer leave wall may be constructed of masonry units such as face Brickwork or Blockwork, the ‘finish’ of the building and will potentially be on view for a very long time.
These two leaves walls are fastened together with metal wall ties, when properly tied together with suitable wall ties, the stiffness and load-bearing capacity of the combined skins can be almost equal to a similar solid wall.
Providing an adequate number of correctly positioned and installed wall ties is the bricklayer’s responsibility.
